“In
Flamenco guitar, the maker must adhere to an expected sound and playability
standard. While it is desirable to
make better Flamenco instruments,
it is not wise to create a guitar sound outside of the artform expectations.” If
you can agree with this statement then you will prefer the ideal Flamenco guitar
as created in Spanish Cypress and European Spruce.
This is the way of the old Guitarreros (Makers) and there is no question
that these materials produce the benchmark Flamenco sound.
The
only problem for solo performers is the need for louder projection in concert
venues and therefore the “Flamenca Negra” or “Black Flamenco” guitar
in Rosewood was created. The
sound of the Flamenca Negra is somewhat at odds with the opening statement but
it is preferred by many professional players and is certainly now part of the
standard sound. I prefer to make a
loud Spanish Cypress guitar and I do so using some of the techniques developed
for the Grand Series. These guitars are also available as Flamenca Negras I have two designs:
Santos
Hernandez was present during the development of both Classical and Flamenco
guitars in the early part of 20th
century Spain. AndreasSegovia
played a Santos Hernandez guitar for 25 years.
In Spain, a “Santos” Flamenco guitar attained a level of mystique
reserved for genius. I like to
think that if Santos Hernandez were alive and making guitars to day that he
would still be innovating, trying to make his instruments better and better.
Perhaps he would have explored some of the ideas you will find in my
“Santos”
I
use master grade seasoned Spanish Cypress and European Spruce which I import
personally. The action is properly
low and percussive. The sound is
quick and with that special crystaline, brittle “Jondo”sound that only
Cypress and Euro Spruce can yield. Flamenco
sized “Spirit Path” rosette, traditional trims. $3200
